About Cellardyke Seaside Sauna
Cellardyke Seaside Sauna is the latest sauna from the Scottish Seaside Sauna stable of horse trailer conversions. More spacious than the iconic Elie Seaside Sauna conversion, it is located next to the, newly renovated, Cellardyke Tidal Pool, in The East Neuk of Fife.
The Cellardyke Tidal Pool Committee was formed out of a committed band of locals, with the aim of widening access to The Tidal Pool. Together they raised thousands of pounds to renovate this much loved jewel in the neckline of tidal pools that adorn the coast of The East Neuk of Fife.
Cellardyke Seaside Sauna provides a cosy refuge that can form part of an overall experience at this legendary Scottish bathing spot.
Here visitors can enjoy hot drinks, from The Grind, outdoor activities, with East Neuk Outdoors and even a wood-fired pizza, along with a swim and a sauna.
Cellardyke Seaside Sauna faces directly South, towards the mythical Isle of May, the nesting place of thousands of pairs sea birds, including Puffins and Arctic Terns, each summer and a nursery for seals, in the autumn. With this aspect, Cellardyke Seaside Sauna’s floor-to-ceiling heat-tempered, glass windows enable guests to enjoy the pool’s famous sunrises and sunsets.
Inside the sauna, the sauna guest is free from distractions. The only screens are what is framed by this glass window, itself. In the sauna time passes gently and conversation flows.
A place to relax and more…
Like Elie Seaside Sauna’s two saunas, Cellardyke Seaside Sauna was born out of The East Neuk’s tradition of sea-swimming. It is informed by Scottish Seaside Saunas founder, Judith Dunlop’s life-long travels throughout The UK, Ireland and The Nordic Region, swimming in countless outdoor pools, experiencing a whole variety of saunas and hot/could thermal baths, backed-up by assiduous research of the tradition of sauna-bathing, with regular visits to Finland and an enbededment within the modern sauna movement, internationally.
Along the road, in nearby Anstruther, there are several places where sauna guests can enjoy some of the region’s famous fish’n’chips, as well as other food and drink offerings, post-sauna.
Heated by a woodburning stove, to temperatures between 70- and 100-degrees C, Cellardyke Seaside Sauna is completely off-grid. Users can book an hour’s session, or longer, either as an individual, or as a group. Sauna users are advised to switch from hot, to cold, every 10, to 15 minutes, enabling their bodies to cool down, in between, with the aid of a plunge in the cool waters of Cellardyke Tidal Pool, if they choose. Through this process, sauna users start to experience the benefits of this liberating environment.
Things you will notice using a sauna
Your Breathing
You will find that being in a sauna, your breathing slows, your airways relax, and you feel more able to breathe. People who suffer from asthma and respiratory diseases, may find relief whilst in a sauna.
YOur Joints and muscles
The increased blood circulation, encouraged by switching from cold to hot and back again, can help reduce muscle soreness, improve joint movement and ease arthritic pain.
You relax
Overall, being off-grid and away from screens – even watches and clocks – and through the slowing down of breathing and muscle relaxation, heart rate reduces, and the mind relaxes. Sauna users let go of stress and find themselves more able to process complex thoughts.
Saunas are social places. They are great places for conversation, for opening-up creativity and developing ideas. Places to spend time relaxing with friends and family. With the reduction in stress, sauna users find themselves more able to enjoy life. They feel their mental health improve, and their creativity and self-confidence boosted.
The sauna is in a converted horse trailer. Built by specialist sauna builders, from heat-treated Alder. It seats 6-8 people. An individual can book a seat, or a group can book out the whole sauna, by the hour.
Those that book the sauna should give themselves plenty of time to get there. There are two routes, one along George Street which is extremely narrow and down Toft Terrace (The Haven Brae), which is extremely steep. Parking is limited during the summer months. Sauna users are requested to bring their own towels; one to sit on, another to use to dry themselves and their own water bottle. There are taps nearby to fill bottles. The sauna is sited a little distance from a public toilet block. There are no changing facilities. However, changing, showers and new toilets are all in the pipeline.
